About the artist

Brenda Malkinson is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Edmonton, Alberta. After graduating from the Alberta College of Art in 1975 she opened her first glass studio in Edmonton in 1979. As a self-taught stained glass artist she invented various glass techniques to create works that were unique for stained glass at that time. With limited means and equipment, her passions of learning and experimenting with a multitude of glass innovations have led her to where she is today. Malkinson’s approach to stained glass has always been from a contemporary point of view, seeing flat glass as a canvas for content and expression. She continues to work towards new ways of interpreting natural elements into glass in her current work, The Silence Around Things.
Malkinson develops permanent installations for architectural environments. Most recent commissions include seventy-two vitrified glass panels for the CK Hui Heart Centre, Edmonton and a 10ft. by 20ft. vitrified glass screen for St. Francis Xavier School. She was awarded the Alberta Centennial Commission for the Alberta Foundation for the Arts in 2006.
Brenda teaches Art and Design Fundamentals for the University of Alberta since 1992 and taught stained glass design and techniques at Series, Red Deer College, (1979-1995). She has written articles for Artists in Stained Glass, Leadline, Alberta Craft Council and Fusion as well as been guest lecturer at the Alberta College of Art, University of Alberta and Artists in Stained Glass.
