The Silence Around Things; Works in Progress 2011
“It is the job of poetry to clean up our word-clogged reality by creating silences around things.” Stéphane Mallarmé
I am inclined to develop inspiration from my experiences in both the poetic and natural world. No matter what language spoken there is a kind of collective understanding that allows the viewer to examine the subtle shifts and rhythms that perpetually occur in nature. Sometimes my subjects are significant occurrences or collective minutiae.
This current body of work in progress is drawings on glass, set with planes of steel. The Silence Around Things focuses on instance, those things we may not take notice of. I use glass; graphite, and steel to best convey these ideas. Using unexpected techniques my intent is to push the boundaries of what I feel I can realize with glass, both physically and conceptually. Merging glass with steel acts to open up the margins and give a nod to the adaptation of diversity.
